WoW Diaries - You Thoughts

Postby Thalioncirth » 14 Nov 2012, 10:44

Hi Guys

I wanted to get some feed back from Adept before putting money into this :)

I have had the idea for some time now.

I am planning creating a site, where people can join up and post a diary of their in game activity. People can then come and browse what others are doing in game and share their adventures as well;

Why would people do this?

1) to become a deeper part in the WoW community
2) Share their adventures with others
3) Potentially earn a little £££ and Prizes

My day job is an affiliate manager (I basically teach people how to make money online) My plan is to add some banners in each post for WoW products IE level guides/gold guides. If a visitor buys a guide by clicking through a link on your diary you get 50% of the profits...

It was just a little idea I had to bring two hobbies together :)

Interested to know what other gamers thoughts are

Thanks

Sounds like it could be fun! :) Only thing I can really say is to try and play on the social aspect of the game and make sure the focus is definitely on socialising with others and making it easy to do through the use of promoting and sharing your adventures, whether that's through an 'Editor's Pick' section, a 'Top Diaries of today' section, etc.

Make the profit side of things more discrete, perhaps offer ad placements to people once they've reached a certain goal, whether that's x-amount of views on their profile, x-amount of subscribers. That way you'll avoid people using it as a way to abuse the ad system.

Definitely sounds like a good idea.

Am I right in thinking the diary is essentially a stream?

Thanks!

if I did it, I would want it to be mainly about the content and people having fun with it

A continuous transmission of a video feed from your computer to a website, such as those on WWW.twitch.tv

Ah thats pretty cool

Not really what I was thinking though initially.

People would basically join up and write posts daily/weekly (whenever they want) with what they have been doing, what they plan to do etc. As though they were writing their own Dairy/Journal

Though my knowledge of lua is pretty limited would be interesting to see if you could tie that into an associated add on for the game.

An example could be in a Achiev toast your add on could pop and give an option to make a comment and then either send it to an associated page or even just save it as a file client side.

Would need to check the add on ToS to make sure you were hitting them but if you could make it do updates frOm within the game it would help people engage with it more frequently.
Never argue with stupid people, they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

If you want to do it with an addon you also need the person to install a client which you use to transfer the stored message to the website. Having people install an addon, extra software and then go to a site isn't really the idea how to lure people.

Sounds to me like it's just a blog of which thousands exist allready and not so many are famous. Even wow insider isn't very big and it's the biggest multi-blog/news site.

Thanks Roseblack and Celuna

Ill have a think on it :) I see your point about thousands of blogs and I wonder if spending too much time on this will prevent me from actually playing the game lol

The only stepup to a blog is live streaming and that is pretty popular. There are 3ways to have a popular stream
1) Show interesting content (progression raiding, +2k RBG or +2.2k arena)
2) Have a nice face/big boobs and stream with a cam in the corner. Content can even be dungeons or leveling alts and you'll allready have hundreds viewers and also very willing donators.
3) Be an interesting person. These are rare but they have very good streams. It's the charismatic people who have a story to tell viewers while playing games.
